What to Expect at a Hearing Test

Your First Step Toward Better Hearing Health

Hearing loss is the third most common medical condition in the U.S., affecting over 48 million Americans. At Audiology Always, we’re here to guide you through every step of the journey—with expertise, care, and clarity.

When you schedule a hearing test with Dr. Lindsey Koble, Doctor of Audiology, you’re receiving care from a licensed expert who specializes in identifying and treating disorders of the auditory system, including hearing loss, tinnitus, and balance issues.

What Happens During a Hearing Test?

A hearing test is painless, non-invasive, and typically takes less than an hour. At Audiology Always, your evaluation is broken down into four simple stages:

Initial Consultation & Case History

In this first step, your audiologist will:

Review your medical and family history

Ask about your daily lifestyle, work environment, and hobbies

Discuss recent noise exposure, medications, or health conditions

Explore specific situations where you struggle to hear

This thorough conversation helps us understand the context of your hearing challenges before we begin testing.

Ear Examination

We’ll begin with a quick physical exam of your ears using an otoscope—a specialized tool that allows us to see inside your ear canal.

This step helps us check for:

Earwax buildup

Signs of infection or inflammation

Any damage to the eardrum

By ruling out these physical causes, we can ensure a more accurate hearing assessment.

Hearing Tests

We perform three main hearing tests, each painless and tailored to measure your specific hearing ability:

Pure Tone Audiometry

You'll wear headphones and listen for different tones at various volumes and pitches. This helps us determine the softest sounds you can hear.

Speech Audiometry

We assess your ability to understand spoken words in quiet and noisy environments by having you repeat back different words and phrases.

Middle Ear Immittance Testing

This measures how well your eardrum responds to changes in pressure and helps diagnose middle ear issues, such as fluid or eustachian tube dysfunction.

Results & Treatment Plan

Once your hearing test is complete, we’ll explain your results using an audiogram—a simple chart that shows how well you hear across various pitches.

During this stage, you’ll receive:

A clear explanation of your hearing profile

Insight into the type and degree of hearing loss (if present)

Tailored treatment recommendations that suit your lifestyle and hearing goals
